EUROPEAN PATENT OFFICE (EPO)

Ateliers Jean Nouvel and Dam & Partners Architecten collaborate on new ‘Main Building’ EPO in Rijswijk (The Hague).
The European Patent Office (EPO) announced the winner of the international competition to design and construct its new ‘Main Building’. The winning consortium consists of four companies belonging to the TBI Group (J.P. van Eesteren, Croon, Wolter & Dros and HEVO), in cooperation with the two leading architectural firms Ateliers Jean Nouvel (FR) and Dam & Partners Architecten (NL).
The new building with a gross area of over 85.000 square meters to house approximate 1750 staff members will be one of the largest construction projects of its kind in the Netherlands today. The new building will be a real landmark of a high quality, sustainable, innovative building, enabling the EPO to continue their mission of supporting innovation in Europe in much improved working conditions.

Jean Nouvel (Ateliers Jean Nouvel) on the design of the new Main Building: “The location calls for a proposal that reveals its real nature, the eternal issue of the specific magic of a place. Our proposal is to introduce a flagship of noble scale and proportion whose materiality is unsettling and whose geometric abstraction, total. This building is calm and serene, nothing can touch it, it’s part of the sky”.

Diederik Dam (Dam & Partners Architecten) states: “On behalf of TBI New Main Consortium we are honored to be chosen for this prestigious project. Jointly working together with our offices and within the consortium during both stages of competition truly shows the power of collaboration. We are looking forward to continue our work with this international team of professionals on this challenging project”.
