Tampa General Hospital engaged Gresham Smith & Partners to lead a multi-disciplinary team in creating development schemes that address the hospital's short- and long-term needs. The resulting five-level addition cuts wait times in the emergency department by tripling its size, relaxes pressure on the ICU by providing more beds for critically ill patients, and extends the hospital’s ability to offer less invasive treatments in cardiac care by adding a cardiovascular center of excellence.
The new extension, which connects at all levels to the western pavilion, is built on stilts with parking underneath. This area doubles as emergency triage in the event of a large-scale disaster.
A level-one trauma center, the healthcare building is also the main teaching hospital for the University of South Florida. The new facility serves as a model for future trauma and critical care centers.
