Work in Progress - Progetto Architettonico: HOPKINS ARCHITECTS
Completion Date: 2018
The Campus Center is a complete re-appraisal of the existing ten storey building on the site, the Holyoke Center designed by Josep Lluis Sert in the 1950s.
The project reconfigures the ground floor, first floor and the top floor - reinterpretting the logic of Sert's architecture in a series of additions to and removals from the existing fabric to create a family of new internal spaces interspersed with a captured internal and external landscape.
A new three-storey pavilion will be the focal point for the building, with a central room around which are gathered a series of interconnected social and meeting Spaces. Between these, a sunken landscape vitrine separates Sert's central double-height concrete arcade from the new architecture, bringing light and landscape into the heart of the building and redefining the linearity of the arcade rather as a place to pause than a place of passage.
With the careful removal of parts of the existing concrete fabric, further views and light connect across the entire width of the building between exterior landscape terraces and roofs and interior rooms with planted walls. A rich spatial offering provides spaces of a variety of scale and character to offer a new opportunity to promote the intellectual, cultural and social life of the University.
Hopkins Architects is partnering with a US team including Bruner Cott, as Executive Architects, Arup, Faithful and Gould, Simpson Gumpertz and Heger and Michael Van Valkenburgh Associates. Construction is now under way and the building is expected to open in 2018.
